The Resources That Helped Me Grow as a Holistic Esthetician (and Can Help You Do the Same)

Resources for Holistic Estheticians

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as an esthetician, it’s that growth doesn’t always look the way you expect it to. It rarely happens in perfect stillness or on a planned day off. For me, it usually happens in the middle of life, driving to work, folding laundry, or setting up my treatment room with an audiobook playing in the background.

I’ve never been a “sit down with a stack of books” kind of person. Between being a mom, a wife, and running a business, I learn best when I can listen and keep moving. Audiobooks have become my way of staying inspired and connected, even on the busiest days.

Over the years, I’ve collected a few resources that have shaped me deeply, not just as an esthetician but as a person. They’ve helped me understand my clients better, refill my energy when I’ve been running on empty, and remember who I am outside of the treatment room.

This isn’t a checklist or a reading challenge. It’s a reminder to stay curious, open, and willing to evolve. Whether you’re just starting your esthetics career or you’ve been in it for years, I hope these resources help you the way they’ve helped me.

Let’s dive in!

The Resource That Taught Me About Healing Acne From Within

When I first came across The Medical Medium, I wasn’t looking for another trend or miracle cure. I was searching for a deeper understanding of why the skin reacts the way it does. His encyclopedia of books opened my eyes to how much our skin reflects what’s happening internally, from digestion and stress to emotional patterns that we hold in the body.

His books taught me to look at acne through a completely different lens. I started learning how things like gut health and inflammation inside the body can show up on the surface. That shifted how I approach the skin and helped me see the connection between inner healing and outer results. Those lessons remind me that the skin is smart. It’s always trying to communicate, and it deserves patience, compassion, and a little curiosity as we figure out what it’s telling us.

Do I agree with everything in the books? Not necessarily, but that’s not the point. What I took from them was a deeper curiosity and a reminder that healing is never one-size-fits-all. Every client has their own story, and sometimes that story starts on the inside.

So when I work with acne clients now, I’m not just thinking about what peel or serum they need. I’m thinking about what their body might be trying to communicate.

The Marketing Book That Changed How I Talk About Skin & Business

When I listened to Building a StoryBrand, it finally clicked why some content connects and some doesn’t. The book talks about how every brand needs to stop trying to be the hero and start being the guide. The client is already the hero of their own story. Our job is to understand where they’re struggling, show them a clear plan, and lead them toward the result they’re dreaming of.

Once I heard that, I started rethinking everything…from how I wrote captions to how I talked about my treatments. Instead of listing all the features of a facial or peel, I started focusing on what clients truly wanted: clear, glowing, confident skin. I made sure every piece of content answered the questions “Can she help me?” and “Do I trust her?”

For estheticians, this book is a game-changer. It helps you clarify your message so clients instantly understand who you help and how you can make their life better. It teaches you how to communicate like the guide you already are: someone who has the tools, the empathy, and the confidence to help clients reach their goals.

If you’ve ever felt like your marketing isn’t landing or your message feels too complicated, listen to this book. It’ll help you speak to your clients in a way that’s clear, human, and easy to connect with.

The Book That Reminded Me to Work from Flow, Not Force

I remember listening to Super Attractor during a time when everything in my life felt like it was moving too fast. I had clients to care for, a business to run, and a family that needed me. I was doing everything right on paper, but something in me felt off balance. That audiobook reminded me that the energy you bring into your work is just as important as the effort you put in.

Gabby Bernstein talks a lot about alignment, being in the flow instead of forcing things, and that message hit home. As estheticians, we hold space for people every single day. When our energy feels calm and grounded, clients can feel that before we even say a word. It changes how we communicate, how we touch the skin, and how we attract the right people to our business.

If you’ve been feeling disconnected from your purpose or craving more flow in your work, this is a book worth listening to. It’s a reminder that when you’re aligned, everything you’re building, from your content to your client relationships, starts to reflect that same energy back to you.

The Certification That Helped Me Connect Internal Health to Skin Results

When I became certified as a health coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, it deepened my understanding of holistic skincare in such a big way. I already knew internal health showed up externally, but this program gave me the education to back it up.

Having that foundation made my holistic approach even stronger. It gave me the confidence to have deeper conversations, connect the dots for my clients, and explain the why behind their breakouts or inflammation in a way that feels empowering and backed by real education.

Learning about nutrition, stress, and lifestyle helped me understand why some clients can’t find lasting results through skincare alone. When someone comes in with acne or inflammation, I’m not just looking at what’s on the surface. I’m thinking about how their habits, hormones, and emotional wellbeing might be showing up through their skin.

For estheticians, IIN is an incredible resource for building confidence in your holistic approach. It helps you make connections between what’s happening inside the body and what you’re seeing on the face, so you can educate clients in a way that feels empowering and grounded in real understanding.

Therapy: The Most Underrated Form of Self-Care for Estheticians

As estheticians, we hold space for so many people, listening to their stories, their insecurities, and sometimes their pain. It’s rewarding work, but it can also be emotionally heavy if you don’t know how to process it, and therapy helps give you those tools. It helps you separate your clients’ emotions from your own and show up as a grounded, present practitioner.

Learning how to communicate clearly, set boundaries, and manage stress doesn’t just make you a better business owner; it makes you a better healer. The more regulated you are, the safer your clients feel to relax, open up, and trust you with their skin and energy.

I’ve worked with my therapist, Dr. Ronda, since 2018, and her therapy sessions have completely changed how I approach every aspect of my life, especially client care. Understanding the subconscious side of stress and self-image helped me connect the dots between emotional health and the skin.

If you’ve been feeling drained, overwhelmed, or unsure how to keep giving your best energy to others, therapy can help you come back to yourself, and that balance reflects in every part of your practice.

Becoming the Esthetician You’re Meant to Be

Every season in this industry teaches you something new. Some lessons come easy, others stretch you in ways you don’t expect, but all of them shape the kind of esthetician you become.

You don’t need to have it all figured out to be successful. You just need to stay open, keep learning, and remember why you started. When you’re connected to that purpose, your energy shifts. Clients can feel it.

If you’ve been craving deeper education and community, my Instagram subscription is where you’ll find it. Since fall 2023, I’ve been uploading new videos every week - client case studies, behind-the-scenes of my business, how I approach skin transformations, and the tools I use to run and grow Enlightened Beauty. There are already so many videos waiting for you to binge, learn from, and feel inspired by.

Because the truth is, you already have the power to create transformation. You just need the guidance, the support, and the belief that you can.
